Frequently asked questions
What iPhone models does Bocce Bocce support?
Bocce Bocce requires ARKit and runs on iPhone XS or later with iOS 17 or later.
For the most accurate measurements, iPhone 12 Pro and later are recommended —
they include a LiDAR scanner that provides true depth data accurate to within millimetres.
Earlier models use camera-based AR, which is less precise but still functional.
Why does the app need camera access?
The camera powers the AR measurement interface — placing distance lines and labels
over the real court. The feed is processed entirely on your device and is never stored,
recorded, or uploaded. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
What's the difference between Game Mode and Quick Measure?
Game Mode is the full experience — teams, colours, a scoreboard, and round-by-round tracking until someone wins.
Quick Measure skips all setup. Open it, lock two points, read the distance. Perfect for settling a dispute without starting a full game.
How do I measure my ball's diameter?
In Game Setup, tap the ball diameter row and choose a preset (90, 100, 107, or 113 mm),
enter a custom value, or tap Measure with AR to have the app measure your
ball using LiDAR. The standard USBF tournament size is 107 mm.
How many teams can I play with?
Game Mode supports 2 or 3 teams. Each team has a custom name and colour. Standard bocce scoring applies — only the team with the closest ball scores in each round.
The measurements don't seem accurate. What can I do?
A few things to try:
Use iPhone 12 Pro or later for LiDAR-powered accuracy.
Slowly pan across the court before measuring — this helps ARKit map the surface.
Ensure good lighting. AR struggles in dark conditions.
Double-check the ball diameter in Game Setup.
Can I play on any surface?
Yes — grass, gravel, sand, clay, any surface. The app detects the ground plane automatically. Highly reflective or wet surfaces may reduce AR accuracy slightly.
Where can I find the rules of bocce?
There's a built-in USBF rules reference in the app. In Game Setup, tap the book icon in the top-right corner.
